Introduction of Singapore Art Festival 2009
The Singapore Art Festival is held between the months of May and June, approximately
one month, allowing everyone to gather and take a look at what the world has to boast in the subject of art. The festival basically contains six main categories: Dance, Music, Theatre, Fest Connect, Outreach and Visual Arts. These enable visitors to enhance their knowledge in arts, as well as instill a sense of pride in visitors from various countries when they come over to Singapore to view artists from their own countries performing. I was not able to make it for the opening ceremony, but I have found some footage that allowed me to know what is going on. http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=market2garden&view=videos&query= Click on the link above if you want to view more footages of the Opening Ceremony. As seen in the video clip, the Singapore Arts Festival was started off when La Compagnie Malabar, internationally renowned in circus and street theatre, exhibited the mythological story of the creation of Helios, the sun god. I did not find it amazing but still, art aficionados are sure to find it amazing. I attended the theatre play, Sin Sangre (Without blood). It depicts a story wherein even at the aftermath of a civil war, there were still many disputes that caused deaths and hatred. The family of Manuel Roca was violently shattered by three men who wanted to take revenge on him. Roca has two kids, a son and a daughter. Both father and son were killed in the scene of carnage and the daughter was spared by the youngest of the men though he was able to find the daughter in her hideaway. Decades later, the girl grew up and wanted a brutal revenge for her family. Out of the three armed men, only one was still alive: the one that spared her life. After locating him, an unexpected conversation rips open their histories that had tortured the lives of the two. As the conversation went, their hatred and hostility towards each other dissipated, releasing the both of them from the horror they had been living in. Photographing was not allowed in the theatre, thus I am unable to show scenes from the play. From the roaring applause, it could be assumed that the theatre play was a success. Even theatre amateurs like me were able to understand the whole play, too. |

Singapore Art Festival Versus Iowa Arts Festival
Singapore Art Festival
Product The product for the two festivals would be the experience and afterthoughts. This is my first ever experience in watching a theatre play and it was not that bad as I thought it would be. It is rather easy to catch up with the storyline, as well as interpret what they are trying to bring across. But it was a disappointment that the theatre play was screened and not live. Compared to the Singapore Arts Festival, which was focused on showcasing culture, the Iowa Arts Festival was geared more towards entertainment. They have sessions for kids and teens like Art Fest Jam Session, The Giant Jam Sandwich and Children's Day Art & Activity Booths. ![]() (A poster of Iowa Arts Festival) Place The different events of the art festival are scattered across different areas in Singapore, assisting in notifying people that there is an art festival. The same goes for the Iowa Arts Festival. Having the theatre plays in The Singapore Library is definitely appropriate as it is quiet and has sufficient space for the audience. With the theatre plays being situated at the Singapore Library, people can actually search information about the different theatre plays conveniently. Also, because the venue is in a library, then people will have the tendency to behave more appropriately. Whereas for the Iowa Arts Festival, it is outdoor-oriented, being conducted at places like parking lots from various streets of Iowa City. ![]() http://www.findersandyoungberg.com/Images/ArtsFest08.jpg Partnerships (Singapore Arts Festival) ![]() There are much more sponsors in the Iowa Arts Festival compared to the Singapore Arts Festival, nevertheless, each of the sponsors contributes a lot to the whole event. Promotion (Communications) ![]() ![]() ![]() The above images are the posters or banners to advertise the Singapore Arts Festival 2009. They can be seen almost everywhere, especially at Orchard Road. The image below depicts the scene on the streets of Orchard Road. Not only that, but thanks to the LED technology, they are able to make use of illuminated cabs to promote the event. As seen from the image below, the cabs are capable of glowing in the dark, making it possible to advertise during the night. ![]() Other than that, there are television commercials, brochures, websites, as well as radio broadcastings mentioning this particular event. ![]() From the website itself, one can see that there are many promotions going on; other communication tools such as Facebook, Twitter and blog sites can be accessed to find out more about the festival. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Marrakesh - Moroccan Lounge & Bar The Rupee Room Mirchi - Taste of India ![]() ![]() ![]() Hot Stones Clarke Quay Al Dente Trattoria Esplanade Barossa Esplanade ![]() Others such as OCBC and NLB also tried to promote the event. Package Discount Buy tickets to 4 or more shows and enjoy discounts of up to 15%! Full-Time Students, NSFs and Senior Citizens (60 years old and above) Group Bookings From 9 March 2009 onwards, purchase 15 tickets or more to any one production and enjoy 15% discount! School Bookings Heavily discounted student tickets, arts appreciation workshops and talks catered specially to schools are now available for booking. With so much promotions going on, there is no doubt that the Singapore Arts Festival would not be simply overlooked by people. As for Iowa Arts Festival, they too have posters, banners, radio broadcasting, website and most probably, television advertising. They also have advertisements in newspaper and magazines. For the communication tools, they too make use of Twitter and Facebook. In addition to those, they also use Flickr and MySpace. The possible reason behind why the Singapore Arts Festival marketing management did not make use of MySpace would be because it is not used commonly. Only a number of Singaporeans have a MySpace account, mainly for checking out music from other countries. Packaging & Distribution To satisfy more visitors, there must be a linkage among the type of event, the venue of the event, as well as additional services such as food and beverages, customer service and more. Having events situated at The National Library makes it quite easy to get to the place simply because there are signs that show one how to get there; buses and cabs can get one there too. Since The National Library is seen as an attraction, more people would know about it, thus even if one does not know how to get there, there will definitely be people that are able to show one how to get there. There are booths for one to take a look into, as well as get more information on the festival itself, and other related plays too. Along the way to The National Library, there is a 7-11 shop, as well as some other shops. It is quite near to Bugis, so it is rather easy to get some other services as well. One of the main intermediaries is Sistic. They allow bookings through the net, phone and by shops located all over Singapore. Sistic too has outlets in other countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia. As for Iowa Arts Festival, the packaging and distribution components differ. Some of the events were hosted at the park, which might not provide as much additional services. But they too have indoor events, like in the mall itself, which is similar to Singapore Arts Festival. Some destinations might not be easy to locate as the website of the Iowa Arts Festival website seems to be more specific in the location compared to Singapore Arts Festival. Compared to the website of Singapore Arts Festival, the website of Iowa Arts Festival gives more specific details about the locations of the venues; it can be inferred, therefore, that those destinations are difficult to locate due to the need to be more precise with the locations. (Singapore Arts Festival) ![]() (Iowa Arts Festival) Since Iowa Arts Festival is free to the general public, there is not any intermediary for the distribution of tickets. Programming Singapore Arts Festival provides a huge range of activities under the various categories mentioned. Since the Singapore Arts Festival lasts longer than the Iowa Arts Festival, there is no doubt that the Singapore Arts Festival provides a larger range of activities. The Iowa Arts Festival has a more organized setting, wherein for the whole duration of the event, there is only one venue; on the other hand, the Singapore Arts Festival has its different events diffused around different areas. Also, the Iowa Arts Festival links together all the events, unlike the Singapore Arts Festival, which does not. Singapore Arts Festival provides six main categories, while Iowa Arts Festival only offers two of them; they are: Arts and Music. But other than that, they have ‘Global Village’ which shows the various languages, music and culture from all over the world, which is quite interesting. The Singapore Arts Festival brings in performers from all over the world. On the other hand, the Iowa Arts Festival only has local performers performing on stage. Having performers from all over the world will definitely be more tempting than just having local artists. Thus most people will be more attracted to Singapore Arts Festival. But in my opinion, I would rather go for Iowa Arts Festival. In that way, I would be supporting everything my country has, and it would have a more ‘homely’ feeling. I would be more willing to enjoy a festival for one whole day, rather than enjoy it as two to three hours. For Iowa Arts Festival, program schedules can also be viewed in its website. The only difference is that some of the events come in a day-by-day schedule. Meaning, they are actually being linked together, unlike Singapore Arts Festival. People Interactions constitute a very large role in an event, regardless of whether is it human to human or human to artifact. As stated in the lecture notes, hospitality received by visitors directly shapes their experience. The interaction between artists and audiences actually brings the audiences closer to the performance that they are patronizing. Walking through the entrance of the National Library, one cannot miss out the fantastic services of the ushers there. No matter how busy they might be, they tend to notice and go up to every visitor that needs help with locating the auditorium. The people in the service counter not only provided us with all kinds of related brochures but were also able to satisfactorily answer our questions. During the day of the play, one of my friends notified that she might arrive late for the play. We could not wait as we would not be allowed to enter the auditorium if we, as well, would be late. The people at the service counter offered to help us hold on to her ticket, so that we could enter the auditorium first and be assured that if she were to reach before the play started, then she would be allowed to enter the auditorium when they hand over her ticket to her. The events provided are similar to what the Singapore Arts Festival has to offer. Thus, to some level, the engagement between audiences and performers are almost of the same level. Since I have not participated in the Iowa Arts Festival, I did not have a chance to interact with the servers and performers over there. Price No doubt that for any event that one were to attend, there is certainly some opportunity forgone. Though the event one would participate might be free, there is still a price to lose. Bus fare, time, plans for the day and many more are all prices that one would have to pay to participate in the event. To be able to allow audiences to be willing to pay those prices, events must be appealing, exciting and be able to satisfy their needs. In my opinion, the Singapore Arts Festival definitely increases one’s knowledge and understanding on various categories of art. Moreover, it changes those biased notions about art that people have in mind. For students, the tickets are actually largely discounted, making it affordable for them and thus they would not really feel the pinch. For other audiences, there are so many promotions and discounts going on that actually make the whole event available for all. Even if one could not afford the ticket for a theatre play or a musical, the opening of the festival is free for all. As for Iowa Arts Festival, since it is free to all of the public, the price of attending the event would be lesser than that of the Singapore Arts Festival’s. With no pricing of tickets involved, it would probably attract much more visitors, while enriching their sense of culture and entertaining them with various activities. |

Best Practices
From the banners I observed in Orchard Road, all the way to Vivocity, I can say that they are eye-catching. Aside from posters and banners, I also get information about the Art Festival through the radio, as well as from word of mouth.
At the National Library, there are many brochures about the other events of Arts Festival, and there are actually a few receptionists that were helping us in knowing more about the different theatre plays available, as well as other categories like music. They are actually actively promoting all kinds of art to people. They have signs around the National Library that shows us where the National Library is situated at. These signs actually act as guides to the destination, as well as a tool to further promote Singapore Arts Festival. |

Stakeholders
As stated in ‘Event Marketing’ by Leonard H. Hoyle, stakeholders for any event can be described as those who hold a personal and compelling interest in the success of that event.
Host Organisation The organisation that made everything possible is the National Arts Council. Without them, probably, there would not be any Arts Festival in Singapore, and people might never get a chance to be inspired by art over here. In promoting art, it has allowed more artistic sides of Singapore to be seen by outsiders, as well as ourselves. They have to make Singapore significant in the arts industry, allowing Singapore to distinguish itself from other nations. Host Community The host community would be everyone living in Singapore. Each of us takes a part in protecting the image of our country, as well as defining our country as a unique one. Our culture, way of life and diversity can all provide definitions of what Singapore really is. All these will actually be factors that allow us to interact with tourists and performers, as well as creating an identity. Sponsor All the sponsors formed a large part of the success of Art Festival 2009. Without their help, I doubt there would be free events and largely discounted tickets; in addition, people would be much less aware of the event and there would be considerably less performers. They helped to subsidize a lot of things that are beyond imagination. With the strategic usage of promotional tools, you can actually see the Arts Festival everywhere. By making the entry fee so much cheaper, all the audiences participating in the event benefit. One just needs to pay a small price, and experience moments that one might never have a chance to go through it again. Media Media plays a very important role in promoting the arts festival to everyone else. We get in touch with media almost every day, and thus by using media to promote the Singapore Arts Festival, people will know about the arts festival. Television channels like Channel 5 and Okto promote the art festival to most of the population who watch television, with Okto mainly targeting kids, and channel 5 to the others. Co-Workers The workers, too, hold an important role. There are many employees located in different divisions. The ushers and employees managing the ticketing counters will most probably be the first workers that get into contact with the visitors to the event. Thus, the interaction between them and the visitors are very crucial. Workers in the backstage crew or production crew are important too. Without their help, there will be many things that will go wrong, thus spoiling the success of the events. Without the backstage crew, there would not be anyone to help bring out the props, test the microphones and many more. Participants and Spectators Participants are people that are performing for the spectators, or rather, they are those factors that motivate spectators to go take a look and see what the performers have to offer for them. Without their works of art, the Arts Festival would not be a success as there would not be anyone that would turn up for the event. Also, without the performers’ potentials in expressing art, spectators would not be tempted to buy the tickets, let alone, go view the performance. Thus they have an important role in interacting with spectators, promoting art, entertaining spectators, as well as leaving great moments for the spectators. Spectators are those that went to view the festival, regardless of the number of events attended. Without the spectators’ participation in any of the events, then the festival would not be a fruitful one. Performers would not be cheered on, their morale would decrease tremendously. Also, without spectators, why would the participants even need to perform? Those roaring applauses are what keep the performers satisfied and motivate them to continue to strive for the very best. |

Main Purpose
In my opinion, the main purpose of having an art festival over here is to enhance the engagement between audiences and performers, promote art, as well as to increase cohesion among the countries all over the world. With that base being fulfilled, a higher level of understanding from different performances can actually be attained.

Tourism Benefits
With art aficionados coming in from different countries, relationships among countries can be further built on. Not only will that, the interaction between performers and audiences also leads to the same effect. Because of the links between performers and their managers and between managers and the organization in charge of the art festival, it would be easier to ask the performers to perform again the next time. With the festival, Singapore would be more known and people might actually want to know more about Singapore; if not, then they would know the artistic side of Singapore. Moreover, famous performers from all over the world actually serve as additional attractions that would bring in more tourists. Also, the benefit of this festival will allow not only Singaporeans, but anyone that has taken part in the festival to have a deeper understanding of what art is all about. For those that do not have a chance to go overseas to see these performances, it would be a great chance for them to get a feel of what it is like to be a part of the event. Government revenue will be one of the benefits too. No doubt that there is much revenue and sponsorship involved for this festival. I personally think that there will be some revenue gained no matter what. Firstly, visitors coming in to watch various events would most probably have to pay for tickets. There are some events that are free, but there are very few of those events in the first place. Also, regarding the international cohesion that I was mentioning earlier, companies from other countries might take this as a potential investment, thus providing Singapore with more revenue in the long run. |
